Rain in the kitchen No one else is listening Taking off my seatbelt Yes or no, what you're dealt Uber fucks and glitter In glittering apartments Yellow coke, it's no joke Thinking about the government Thinking about the government Dog shit silhouette Private party bondage Game of Russian roulette Oh lord you're not dead Thank you sir, born again This ain't yours anymore Cleansing for a Sound Set If you would just listen to the fireworks popping outside This isn't right And what about the vote, dear lord, I ought to worry about it sometimes This isn't right Compliment then reset Duckface, online bet Speed it through Slow it down Fuck São Paulo Fuck this town May I say fuck L.A. Unafraid, lost in space Two thumbs up, then relate Almond milk, sip and create Rub it in, pull it off Housing rubble met with scoff .38s, .45s Shivs, bananas, kitchen knives Hungry this, hungry that Ipanema, Black Lives Matter Wagyu beef, silver-plattered Havaianas, coconut water If you would just listen to the fireworks popping outside This isn't right And what about the vote, dear lord, I ought to worry about it sometimes This isn't right What of now Scenic bow Bloody barks Rich somehow Fence this up Hang a thief Televise it, huge relief It's OK No big deal There's no racism in Brazil Drive at night Gratis thrill Wolves outside Out to kill We are home

Caveboi 03:42
Alex sits on couch for the evening Of his concrete-sipping, white-walled living room Coke and vodka in his veins Something good to drive him insane Some tears to shed to something on YouTube Tired men in overalls Hug their children and then cry a lot Alex wants in on the action For a fraction of the cost Just before the Bank of Brazil Brought his thought-waves back to a still His belly's scarred so food won't fill That hole inside, that's now for real It keeps him hungry, but not for food at least And then between a sob sometimes He might not hear the gunfire There's a less than stable payroll A growling from the outside Baby I know The shadows on your wall The story goes that once as a kid A speeding car almost got him killed The car that did this made that hole From which his dreams could now unfurl There's a lot to choose A brand new role A brand new start Well, not everyone gets one Between your dad, your son and me I hope you one day end up free I kiss your hands and lovingly await For you to be born again babe And breathe Baby I know The shadows on your wall

Would you rather go the distance Would you rather stop insisting Playing this delusional game Oftentimes in dread's persistence You would rather seek assistance Anyplace but within I'm not sorry for you my friend Alright, tell me what's the difference You feel pain for one's indifference Well maybe it was hard-earned pain There's a line wherein collisions Breed potential for decisions And a forest up for flames I'm not sorry for you my friend And if in pain you feel proficient And in despair you breathe commitment What will you do with the remains Would you rather remain decent Would you like to sometimes listen Instead of overloading your brain I'm not sorry for you my friend Growing up can be a hindrance So would you kindly stop insisting That it's a fear that you can contain

Senna 03:35
When Ayrton Senna died Back in 1995 Or was it 1994 Long before you lost your mind Could you go another season I'm reeling in Or maybe not When the cold and grey were raised And some money came our way Back in 1996 Long before you lost your kicks Could it be that somehow You felt not afraid I don't mind to let you down I don't mind to let you down Sometimes I do When the spider broke his leg Back in in 2012 Or was it 2014 Long before it all went to hell Could you go another season I'm breathing in Sometimes I can't When the cold and grey were raised And some money came our way Back in 1996 Long before you lost your kicks Could it be that somehow You felt not afraid I don't mind to let you down I don't mind to let you down I don't mind to let you down I don't mind to let you down

Consume Me 06:38
Nothing of love will come out of this talking Maybe this happened again Maybe we followed the rules but got sloppy Only to somehow forget Your bed smells like earth And your lips smell like suffering Maybe it's all in my head Everything moves Yet with you it's all stopping Over and over Moving You've got this fool feel like moving Faster than anything else Faster than all of the shit that need proving Right before everything melts You got this pain feel like soothing Better than anything else Better than everything I like consuming you Consuming you Is it scene Or truth we bring And all I'm thinking you thought first Mind your own fucking business Why don't you mind our own fucking business Please You said to me one day You don't know me yet
6.
Supermarket 01:40
Before the uncontested myths The poetry of economic crime You'd see me one day as a child Curling forward, screaming "fire" The biggest supermarket in my grandma's neighborhood was burning And it was spectacular Spectacular And all the adults walking by Wearing nervous, awkward smiles A chance for some to socialize There were eight buildings, like matchboxes Surrounded by a wall And in the entrance for the cars They painted a big Brazilian flag I don't remember what year it was But I don't think we won no world cup that year I kept screaming "Save yourselves" "Save yourselves" But what good winning was A big black cloud hang above Engulfing us And I remember I would cough Pretending I was dying And no one paid attention to my unconvincing crying And now I can't recall what really happened after all They must've fixed it up cause some time later It was as good as new It was like the fire never happened

On the 22nd floor Right next to the bathroom door Lies a speck of green A plant of unknown origins for him Kitchen stall is sparkling clean Read the news, coffee machine Yet no questions as to how his new gift came to be Someone from work maybe And for the first time it brought him to his knees Takes a look down to the pool The favelas, public schools In the distance, toothpicks jut up all defiantly alone Well at least it is a home Good paychecks, lemongrass foam And a thirst for something Like his plant keeps thirsty for some love Water away And now that's how he'd want to spend his days First the phones, their batteries dried Unanswered calls, his parents worried sick Crying messages, unheard Then the plant grew salient vines It cracked the walls, let in sunlight And that's how he lost his front door They found him growling like an animal Found him screaming "I'm in love" They found him mauling through apartment walls Found him screaming "I'm in love" They said that he was a man of reason With many things to hide They said that he was a man of reason With many thorns inside
8.
I think I'll never go back home Go back home Go back home To this greyscale haven made of flesh and bone This obscene amount of racist overtones Go back home Go back home Living in a fantasy I can feel it coming even though it has nothing to do with me I'm obsessing now, purple flowers piling on my feet I can hear the screams, but I tell myself it's only in my sleep It's an industry It's an industry I feel Like it's Sunday in São Paulo And I'm craving for Clonazepam and chill The spill Up from the apartment towers Falls as thick as snow As candy for their wallet and my nose I think I'll never go back home Go back home Go back home To this oozing box from which I grow alone This incoming beast whose mouth is full of foam Go back home Go back home I feel Like it's Saturday in Athens And I'm craving for Alprazolam and chill The kills And electronic calls for action The quarter-century detachment From every ounce of what once felt real I wish it was Brazil I wish it was right here The sense of dread misplaced No Instagram, no Fear A mythical disease Some relatives to please Pay heed for the nose bleed Spend summertimes in Crete My silence, no longer cheap My endless reverie Hell, until someone invents a button for it I'll think myself to sleep
9.
Protector 02:24
Protect me, protector If only for one second Anoint me whole with your mistakes And opening my eye wide to a winter sigh With my social landscape by my side I ignore my future self Deceive me, deceptor Unknown, almighty specter Remind me of the wary child Alert but also brave In the darkness In the dancing of some planet, an adventure A forgiving to the past Did you awaken All the monsters by my bedside Were you mistaken Your dominion compromised All your mysteries declined
10.
Legendary 03:18
Despite the legendary efforts at incision The weathered wrinkles whispered caution with precision Both wine and water sat All tarnished by the leather And on the seventh day The blood vanished altogether As unsuspecting travelers ignore the dangers Of undermining walls, and seas, and fucks with strangers The limits sleep at heart But eat with bursting bellies And blame the pods of spit, and fear, and secret candy They're not afraid Oh well, that was a lie They're entertained Enough to last a life They're half insane Unless they're teary-eyed But are they to blame And every nook and crany floods out of proportion And songs in foreign tongues were sang with great emotion The starry veil grows blue Despite of our devotion And silhouettes grow still and fade into the ocean
11.
I'm a quantum supercomputer Computing superbly on my fragility The horizon between the potential Of the jello within us and our bodies hurts me Only sometimes In the sighing dust devils In the obsession of the longing of lovers Only not scared Under harmless submission In the traversal of the pygmies through concrete I'll drive to São Paulo I'll drive there, so bless your heart With nothing to follow I'll harness my brand new start We've had all those answers From which we would often fall apart Well it doesn't matter We've found comfort in the dark

about

Jef Maarawi is a singer-songwriter from Brazil, Greece, and Syria. His new album “TERRA PAPAGALLI” will be released on LP and Digital on 23 April 2021 via Inner Ear.

“TERRA PAPAGALLI”(Land of Parrots) was one of the first names given to the land now known as Brazil.

These are stories about mimicry and uniqueness, wishful extroversion and entropic loneliness. It is an album about trying to understand what "home" is, and a meditation on the choice / desire we have to carry it within us.
“TERRA PAPAGALLI” is an album about Brazil, a broken protest record, an unrelatable meme, an account of a childhood far both in space and in time.

It is the Not-So-Great American Folk Album sung in a foreign tongue. But what is foreign after all? And how convincing are the parrot reveries?
